About

Background

From the age of 17, I've had a distinct call to minister to believers using the Spirit's gifts of preaching and teaching. The Lord has taken me on a winding road in that calling, from serving as a youth minister at the age of 19, as youth and education minister in Presbyterian and Baptist churches, as a bivocational pastor for 5 years, as lay leader, and now to pastoring a rural church in the small town of Pine Apple, Alabama.

I've always sought out the Lord's wisdom. One of my earliest memories of my father's family devotional time was the story he told me of King Solomon choosing wisdom over riches and power. That story so impressed me that I prayed that night that God would give me wisdom, and the Lord has been faithful to do so. That thirst for wisdom has led me to seek knowledge both in the "professional" world and in theological studies. I have a full-time job as a software engineer, working with my father and my brother at the company that my father started, Montgomery Technology, Inc. At the same time, I am working towards my Masters of Arts in Biblical Studies at Reformed Theological Seminary.

Beyond the blessings of spiritual gifts and wisdom, the Lord has blessed me with a wife and children that bring joy and fulfillment to my life. My wife, Leah, is the picture of the "Proverbs 31" woman. My children, Eden, Logan, and Micah, bring the excitement and responsibility of passing on the faith to the next generation.

Beliefs

I hold to the reformed Baptist tradition of the Christian faith. I was raised in a Southern Baptist church, ordained in a Southern Baptist church, and currently serve in a Southern Baptist church. I affirm the Baptist Faith and Message of 2000, but I also find that the London Baptist Confession of 1689 more precisely communicates my beliefs.

Why Blog?

I've created this blog for three reasons. First, I want to provide the transcripts of my sermons, as well as a link to the audio for my sermons for my church members and friends and family that might be interested in following my ministry. A blog is a simple and concise way to do that.

More broadly, I wish to set forth a method of preaching and teaching that I believe is more biblical and consistent than what is often practiced, particularly in Baptist churches, today. I plan to publish posts that flesh out this method in hopes that pastors will consider the epistemological foundations of the methods they use for teaching and preaching, as well as the style and content.

And, finally, I write a great deal, and I hope to use this blog to publish some of that writing for the benefit of my church and community.
